E-TRAN - Power System Translation

E-Tran v2.0 released! - November 19, 2008

A new version of E-Tran has been released that includes :

  • Added PSS/E V31 support
  • Translation of all standard machine, exciters, governors, stabilizers, min/max excitation, and compounding from .dyr file
  • Added support for lockless trial/demo licenses
  • Support for Intel V9 and V10 Fortran 90 Compilers
  • Added support for new transformer data format for resistances (PSCAD V5)
  • Added E-TRAN Runtime component to read data from PSS/E .dyr file and use in PSCAD custom models or circuits
  • Added E-TRAN Runtime component to detect and find numerical instabilities
  • Added E-TRAN Runtime component to scale models (ie 1 wind turbine to 100 turbines) using transformer inductances

Introduction to E-TRAN

Users of EMT (Electromagnetic Transients) simulation programs (such as PSCAD/EMTDC) often face difficulties in obtaining data and developing cases suitable for their studies. Many utilities have the data available for their entire system in loadflow programs, but a great deal of effort is required to re-enter the network data for use in EMT programs. Example of detailed data for substitution into PSCAD case

Three common challenges which must be overcome are:

  • Translation of circuit/network data (differences in PU systems, data entry...).
  • The generation of network equivalents.
  • Initialization of machine, generators or sources in large inter-connected networks.

We have developed the E-TRAN translator in house to automate the processes that we had to repeat for each new study we performed for our customers. The use of E-TRAN has not only saved us considerable time and effort while performing studies for clients, but it has given us additional confidence in our study results. Machines and sources are correctly initialized by E-TRAN according to the input loadflow solution

E-Tran can:

  • Translate PSS/E .raw files into fully initialized PSCAD files
  • Generate excellent network equivalents
  • Correctly initialize components to loadflow steady state values
  • Provide capability for a substitution library, allowing the user to use their detailed models in place of simple loadflow data

The E-TRAN tool is now available commercially.
